Change Your Life & Improve Your Health with Yoga
By Jarryd Arden
My love for yoga began 6 years ago in Los Angeles, California. I was a young graduate student pursuing my Fine Arts Master’s degree in Acting at CalArts.
It’s the first week of classes and I am blown away by the whole experience – meeting my classmates, meeting my professors, seeing the city, kickbacks – I mean it’s LA! Everyone was an artist, and I was intrigued to learn but I didn’t know what exactly. It was Thursday 4pm, September, 2011. My friends and I roll into class, and there’s this little lady standing there, in the middle of an empty room, in all black, with probably the brightest eyes I’d ever seen. Tina Kronis, my Movement instructor. Quickly, she introduces herself to us, we do the same, and then she claps, “Alright let’s get started.”
We grabbed some mats and the rest is history.
I have always been into athletics, and played a few sports, but my body never moved this way before. I was used to simple stretching and aggressive exercise. This was a slow, relaxed, strength-driven exercise, not just for the body but for the mind and soul as well. It challenged me. We would do yoga for 90 minutes, and I would be totally drenched. Yet I was limber, more focused and energetic. It was the most fun I’d ever had in a classroom. I started to do it in the morning, before bed, before performances, before & after workouts, and whenever I was stressed.
There are so many benefits.
Physical-increased flexibility, increased muscle strength and tone, improved respiration, energy and vitality, balanced metabolism, weight reduction, cardio & circulatory health, improved athletic performance, and protection from injury.
Mental-increased body awareness, relieves stress, reduces muscle tension, strain, and inflammation, sharpens attention and concentration, and calms and centers the nervous system.
Spiritual-mind, body, spirit connection (we are 3-part beings), self-awareness, self-esteem, oneness(unity).
The greatest thing about yoga is that everyone can do it.
Since that Thursday afternoon, all the way through grad school, to now, I have been practicing yoga regularly as a part of improving and maintaining my personal health and fitness. Over the past 6 years I have learned so much about myself and others through this practice that I invite you to try it. Actually, I suggest that you try it. Be patient with yourself and always listen to your body, there will always be room for improvement. “Room for improvement” means just that, so give yourself time to grow and celebrate all the small victories along the way to better overall health.
